Coal-fired station decision ignores climate change report: Greens

he New South Wales Greens say the State Government's decision to build a new coal-fired power station goes against the recommendations in the latest United Nations (UN) report on climate change.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has found the cost of reducing emissions would have a minimal impact on world economic growth and has called for urgent political action to address the situation.

State MP and the Greens' energy spokesman John Kaye says the Government needs to move away from its reliance on coal and focus on cleaner, renewable energy sources.

"We need to put in place policy settings, mandatory renewable energy targets, energy efficiency standards that ensure that the renewable energy industry develops in New South Wales in a way that creates lots of jobs and reduces greenhouse gas emissions," he said.
